What is this class all about?
Well. . . it is about YOU! One of my favorite quotes from this Sir Ken Robinson video is "We should be waking students up to what is inside of them!". What ways can we provide opportunities to do this in our current educational model? That is one of the driving questions I have had in the development of this course and at the heart of it is YOU, the learner!
We will work together to create a space that allows for multiple ways to explore, engage, express, and learn new things together! The first few weeks focus on some big questions. . .
What is creativity? What do Artists do? Where do good ideas come from? Through creativity challenges that connect to the creative process we will start to lay the foundation for our four personalized learning projects.
As we move towards the independent projects we will explore how artists are making creative connections ALL the time.

Changing the Paradigm
Sir Ken Robinson remains one of my education brain crushes! This video of a talk he gave some years ago has stuck with me and his insights into creativity guide me in my quest to provide a small shift in the larger system.
" We stigmatize mistakes. And we’re now running national educational systems where mistakes are the worst thing you can make — and the result is that we are educating people out of their creative capacities." |

What is Creativity?
Think of creativity as a muscle. . .the more you use it the stronger it gets! It is not isolated to just the arts! It is a essential in science, business, engineering, just to name a few.
According to the World Economic Forum, creativity will be the third-most-important skill for employees by 2020, behind complex problem-solving and critical thinking. The How to be Creative video does a great job of explaining the complexity of creative thinking, but also provides practical guidance on things we can do to tap into our creative flow!
creativity: ability to generate, create, or discover new ideas, solutions, and possibilities
convergent thinking: the opposite of divergent thinking, the capacity to narrow in on the single “correct” answer or solution to a given question or problem. divergent thinking: the opposite of convergent thinking, the capacity for exploring multiple potential answers or solutions to a given question or problem. |
